Introducing “Feature Fridays”

Apologies to all who were anticipating the third theme to be revealed last week–I was sick. Fridays will now be Featured Fridays. Since many people countdown the days until Friday, this theme will count down the top 5 of anything in a related category to FireFold or Technology.

Wired Wednesday — Who Turned Off All the Lights?

The quoted text comes from the following article: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/01/why-weve-censored-wired-com/

The Internet may look a little different today, but that is because it may actually start working differently tomorrow. Today is the scheduled blackout of different websites in protest against two pieces of legislation — SOPA and PIPA — which have raised concern among many companies and knowledgeable individuals in the technology industry. The arguments and commentary quoted in this article will be biased against SOPA/PIPA, but the behavior of this and other websites should garner interest into this piece of legislation that could affect the world.

Going to Wired will allow you to see their form of protest against the anti-piracy bills: “We’ve blacked out the headlines on our website homepage today as part of a global internet protest against two radical anti-piracy bills pending in Congress”. Wait a minute, aren’t we talking about ‘anti-piracy’? What’s wrong with that? Well, nothing really if we’re talking about the idea of anti-piracy, but what many insiders are harping on is the “current wording of the measures” and the possibilities for abuse:

the Attorney General would have the power to order ISPs to block access to foreign-based sites suspected of trafficking in pirated and counterfeit goods; order search engines to delist the sites from their indexes; ban advertising on suspected sites; and block payment services from processing transactions for accused sites. If the same standards were applied to U.S.-based sites, Wikipedia, Tumblr, WordPress, Blogger, Google and Wired could all find themselves blocked.

Elaborating more on the issue is the following video:

Some of the issues brought up are:

  • That you could just enter the IP address to access banned sites
  • Puts burden of monitoring infringing links on the host website
  • Copyright protection is already in place

Readers should take the time to get comfortable with the issue being debated. If the following websites are willing to oppose these bills by modifying content in order to bring light to the situation, then the situation just might be that dire. What are your thoughts on the two anti-piracy bills and their consequences?

Introducing “Wired Wednesdays”

Next up is Wednesday’s “Wired” theme. These articles will sample a story from Wired, a technology magazine. Discussing these outside topics will provide the reader with a broader look at the technological world and a nice topic (and argument) for conversation.
